freieFarbe e.V. took part in the DIN Connect competition together with several members of the association. We are one of the winners. As a winner, we have received a research and development contract from the German Institute for Standardisation (DIN) for the creation of the DIN specification (DIN SPEC) \u201eOpen Colour Communication\u201c. The project is scheduled to run for one year in several stages and is financially supported by DIN.<\/p>\n
In a way, the DIN SPEC is the little brother of the DIN standard. DIN writes: \u201eThe DIN SPEC is a highly effective marketing tool which, thanks to the recognised DIN brand, ensures a high level of acceptance among customers and partners. DIN ensures that the DIN SPEC does not conflict with existing standards and publishes the standards, including internationally. A DIN SPEC can be the basis for a DIN standard.\u201c More details can be found on the DIN website<\/a>.<\/p>\n We want to show that with open tools and processes as well as Creative Commons licences, especially the CIELAB standard, ICC-based colour management and ISO standards for spectral data, colour communication on a professional level is possible.<\/p>\n The project is financially supported by DIN, for which we are grateful. The worldwide reputation of the German Institute for Standardisation, the \u201erationalisation through standardisation\u201c approach, the non-profit status of DIN - these are all reasons to continue to be pleased. The subsequent publication of the specification by DIN is an opportunity for the idea of \u201efree colour\u201c to spread far and wide.<\/p>\nWhy does this development make so much sense?<\/h3>\n
